Gorillas live in family units known as troops. The silverback gorilla is the alpha male, elder, and protector of the family unit. The typical silverback stands six feet tall and weighs around 350 pounds. Often referred to as mountain gorillas, silverbacks have long, black hair with thick, shaggy coats and a definitive stripe of silver down their backs.
Obverse
On the obverse of 2021 Congo Silverback Gorilla 1 oz Silver Coins is a depiction of a powerful male gorilla. This silverback is standing on his hind legs while resting his hands on the rocks in front of him. Male silverbacks will often stand on their hind legs, stamp their feet, and pound their chests in a display of dominance to scare off any threats to the troop. IN this unique design, the male silverback appears to blend in with the rocks around him, a symbol of the solid strength of the male silverback. Reverse
The reverse side of the 2021 Congo Silverback Gorilla Silver Coin is an image of the Congolese coat of arms. The seal of the nation includes a shield with a rampant lion clutching a torch. The shield is supported by heraldic elephants on each side that stand on a tree trunk that runs beneath the shield. The inscriptions on this face of the coin read REPUBLIQUE DU CONGO and 500 FRANCS CFA.
History
The Congo Silverback Series was introduced in 2015 by Scottsdale Mint. The coins traditionally come in 1 oz silver as a BU specimen with proof-like visuals and as a colorized BU specimen. The mint also has issued the coins as 1 Kilo proof specimens at times.
