Obverse

Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse side of 2021 Canadian Panning for Gold Coins. This portrait of the Queen was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt, who is just the second Canadian artist to develop a portrait of the Queen for Canadian coins. This fourth-generation portrait is set in right-profile relief and is the first to lack a crown on the Queens head. The inscriptions on this face of the coin read Elizabeth II, D.G. Regina, and 200 Dollars, the highest denomination available on Canadian gold coins.

Reverse

A gold panner’s sifting pan is shown in the reverse design of the 2021 Canadian Panning for Gold 1 oz Gold Coin. The image shows a pan full of sediment that is being poured out to discover if any gold nuggets or leaf are hidden in the sediment. The water pours out onto a maple leaf logo. This side also has the laser micro-engraved maple leaf privy mark that includes the 21 date mark within. This date mark is only visible under magnification. Inscriptions include Canada, 2021, 99999, Fine Gold, and 1 oz Or Pur.

History

The Klondike Gold Rush started with the discovery of a small amount of gold in August 1896. Over the next year, thousands would flood west from Canadas established cities in the eastern provinces and north from American cities such as San Francisco and Seattle. The gold rush ended as quickly as it began, with the 1899 discovery of gold in Nome, Alaska, drawing away those who had found no luck in the Klondike to the next big goldfield.
