The White Greyhound of Richmond comes to the Royal Arms of England directly through King Henry VII. The first monarch from the House of Tudor, King Henry VII and his forces ended the Wars of the Roses by defeating King Richard III of the House of York, establishing a dynasty that ran from 1485 to 1603. The White Greyhound was handed down to Henry VII from his father, Edmund Tudor, the 1^st Earl of Richmond.

History

Edmund Tudor was the second husband of Lady Margaret Beaufort and father of Henry Tudor, the future King Henry VII and founder of the House of Tudor dynasty that ruled the crown for nearly a century and a quarter. Henry VII replaced the Lion of England in his coat of arms with the White Greyhound and put it opposite of the Red Dragon of Wales, a nod to his father, Edmund Tudor, who came from the family of Owen Tudor, an influential Welsh family.
