Introduced in 1989, the original Austrian Philharmonic Gold Coins were the 1 oz and 1/4 oz coins. In 1991, the Austrian Mint offered the 1/10 oz gold coin for the first time. In 1994, the 1/2 oz gold coin was introduced. The most unique coin release was the 1/25 oz gold coin introduced in 2014. The coin was initially meant as a 25th-anniversary release to celebrate a quarter-century of the program, but was so popular it has remained in production since.

Obverse

Featured on the obverse of the 2021 Austrian Philharmonic 1/4 oz Gold Coin is the Great Pipe Organ. The second of two organs ever installed in the Musikverein, this pipe organ was recently upgraded in 2011. The design on this side showcases the grandeur of the organ with inscriptions around the design element in German. These include Republik Osterreich, 1/4 Unze Gold 999.9, 2021, and 25 Euro.

Reverse

Included in the reverse field of 2021 Austrian Philharmonic Gold Coins is an image of musical instruments favored by the members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The cluster of instruments shown here includes a cello at the center with two violins on either side. The background shows a Vienna horn, a bassoon, and a harp. Inscriptions on this face of the coin read Wiener Philharmoniker.

History

The debut of the Austrian Philharmonic 1/4 oz Gold Coin in 1989 brought with it the highest mintage in the series at 272,000 gold coins. The first several years saw very high mintages, many of which remain among the best-selling years in the collection. The 1989 and 1992 coins remain the best-selling, respectively, with the next best-selling date being the 2009 coin.
