A gorgeous collectible in the Legends of Japan collection brings together the popular Momotaro fairytale with the nation’s rich tradition of anime and manga-styled artwork. It’s a combination that makes eminent sense: especially in postwar Japan, generations of children have learned through cartoons about the character of Momotaro, his motley group of animal companions, and their battle against the Oni — “ogres” or “demons” — who had plagued their home for generations. A key scene from the legend brings the hero and his friends to the island of his enemies, named Onigashima or Demon Island, and is celebrated on the 2021 Antique Samoa Momotaro Onto Demon Island in Anime 1 oz Silver Coin.
Highlights:
The 2021 Antique Samoa Momotaro Onto Demon Island in Anime Silver Coin features high-relief, detailed engravings enriched by a beautiful antique finish. It comes in a secure plastic capsule, and is fully insured against any possible loss or damage by Provident Metals.
Obverse
The coin’s obverse side sports the Samoan coat of arms, verifying it as legal tender. It’s accompanied by inscriptions confirming the coin’s weight, silver contents, and year and country of issue, all surrounded by a decorative border.
Reverse
The reverse side of this coin features anime-style artwork of Momotaro and his friends on the water, flourishing a banner and storming Onigashima or “Demon Island.” The scene overlaps a decorative border, featuring stylized waves in the foreground.
History
The supernatural hero Momotaro was born from a giant peach in answer to the prayers of a childless, elderly couple, and he was incredibly strong from his earliest years, once cutting down a tree with just an old knife when he was only a small child. By the time he grew into adolescence, the young hero was aware that a band of monstrous Oni (or “demons”) were plaguing his home village and had been doing so for decades. He set forth to confront them, gathering a group of animal companions with the aid of his parents’ delicious millet dumplings, and eventually, he would overthrow the Chief of the Oni to bring peace to the land. This iconic story has inspired generations of Japanese children and forms the focus of an extensive Momotaro coin series in the Legends of Japan collection.
