The 2021 release of American Eagle Silver Coins from the United States Mint marks the 35th anniversary of the series. To celebrate this occasion, the US Mint is debuting a new reverse design for the first time in the history of the series. 2021 is also unique for its release of Type 1 coins with the original imagery and the new Type 2 coins with the all-new bald eagle design. Each Mint State 70 coin showcases full, original mint luster with no detractions present. The slab comes with a unique American bald eagle label that shows the eagle soaring across the two labels. Additionally, the coins are arranged with the Type 1 and Type 2 reverse fields showing in the slab on the same side as the Eagle Label.
Obverse
Walking Liberty features on the obverse of both coins in the 2021 American Eagle Silver 2-Coin Set. The image of Liberty is set in left-profile relief as she walks toward the sun with her right hand outstretched and her left hand carrying the branches of oak and laurel. The Type 2 coin has a new inclusion in the obverse field. Adolph A. Weinmans original AW signature mark from 1916 now features on the coins. Other inscriptions on the coins include Liberty, In God We Trust, and 2021.
Reverse
The American bald eagle is found on the reverse of 2021 American Eagle 1 oz Silver 2-Coin Sets. The Type 1 coin bears the Heraldic Eagle of the United States as designed in 1986 by John Mercanti. The Type 2 coin features the new American bald eagle in flight as created by Emily Damstra. Her new image of the bald eagle shows the bird with its wings stretched behind its back and its talons clutching an oak branch. The inscriptions on the coins read United States of America, E Pluribus Unum, 1 oz. Fine Silver, and One Dollar.
History
The new Type 2 coins not only feature Weinmans AW initials on the obverse and Damstras new bald eagle design on the reverse, but also a new security feature. There is a variation in the reeded edge on the Type 2 coins to combat counterfeiting.
