Lady Liberty features on the obverse side of 2021 American Eagle Gold Coins. This design comes from 1907 and was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens for the $20 Double Eagle Gold Coin. It depicts Liberty walking toward the viewer with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other as sun rays frame her figure from behind. Inscriptions on this face of the coin read LIBERTY and 2021.
Reverse
A new vision of the American bald eagle is found on the reverse field of the 2021 American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin. The bald eagle is depicted in left-profile relief with the full detail of its plumage, its hooked beak, and its piercing gaze. The inscriptions on this side of the coin include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and 1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD 25 DOLLARS.
History
The debut of a refreshed bald eagle design on the reverse side of 2021 American Eagle Type 2 Gold Coins marks the first major overhaul of the series. In 1992, the series received its only other visual modification. This was a minor change and involved switching to Arabic numerals for the date marks instead of Roman numerals.
