Burnished American Eagles go through a unique coining process at the United States Mint to create the soft, matte visuals of the coin. After blanks are punched, the US Mint places all blanks into a rolling drum with a polishing medium that cleans and polishes the items before each one is struck with the American Eagle die in a coining press. The result of this process not only creates a smooth surface, it also helps to remove any imperfections from the original blank, such as scratches, rough spots, or blemishes.

Obverse

Walking Liberty is found on the obverse of 2020-W Burnished American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins. Designed by Adolph A. Weinman, the image comes with a left-profile figure of Lady Liberty walking toward the sun on the horizon. The symbolism of this design points to the nations consistent march toward a brighter future. Inscriptions on this face of the coin include Liberty, In God We Trust, and 2014.

Reverse

The heraldic eagle of the United States is showcased on the reverse side of 2020-W Burnished American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins. The design here shows a powerful bald eagle with the US national shield on its chest, arrows of war in one talon, and the olive branch of peace in the other. The birds head looks to the olive branch while clutching a ribbon in its beak with E Pluribus Unum inscribed. A triangular cluster of 13 stars is engraved above the eagle honoring the original 13 American colonies. Other inscriptions read United States of America and 1 oz. Fine Silver One Dollar.

History

The Burnished American Eagle Silver Coin debuted in 2006. It was met with intense demand from 2006 to 2008, but had to be suspended in 2009 and 2010 amidst a surge in demand for the BU version of the coin and a shortage of available silver blanks.
