The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame was named in honor of James Naismith, the man considered the father of basketball in North America. The Canadian-American physician wrote the first rule book for the sport in the late 19^th century while working at the University of Kansas. Naismith served as the first coach for KU basketball, a program that is considered among the most prestigious in NCAA basketball. Ironically, Naismith is the only coach in KU history with a losing record as coach.
