History

The popular folktale of Momotaro first appeared in print in the early 17th century and has taken many forms in different eras and regions of Japan. Its best-known form was taught to schoolchildren during the Meiji Period: this is the version that saw him born from a giant peach and filled with energetic bravery and optimism that would make him a role model for students. This version of Momotaro was superhumanly strong even in early childhood, and by the time he was an adolescent was ready to overthrow the demonic band of Oni marauders who had long menaced his home.
