The Mayflower set off from the coast of the United Kingdom in September 1620 with some 102 Puritans and other migrants aboard. The ship spent more than two months at sea, eventually anchoring off the coast of Massachusetts for a period of time before moving ashore to find a place to settle. When the Pilgrims arrived, the Wampanoag indigenous tribe was already inhabiting the region and would prove vital to the long-term survival of the settlers.
