Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse of 2020 Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold coins. This design is from Susanna Blunt and was created in 2003 for the Royal Canadian Mint. British monarchs are depicted in the opposite relief of their predecessor, with Queen Elizabeth II depicted in right-profile relief to be the opposite of her father, King George VIs left-profile reliefs. The Susanna Blunt design is the first to depict a British monarch without a crown since the reign of George VI.

Reverse

A sugar maple leaf is shown on the reverse side of 2020 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coins. The image on this side of the coin has remained the same since 1979 when the series debuted and was created by Walter Ott.

History

Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins debuted with only these 1 oz gold coins. Today, the series is available with 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/20 oz, and 1 Gram gold coins, all of which feature .9999 pure gold content. The coins were introduced in stages, with the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins added first, followed (in order) by the 1/2 oz coin, 1/10 oz coin, 1/20 oz coin, and 1 Gram coin. Only the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins debuted together. All other additional coins were introduced one weight at a time.
