Brumbies, as the free-roaming horses of Australia are known, were once domesticated horse breeds that have been procreating and existing in the wilds of Australia for more than two centuries now. Obverse

The obverse face of 2020 Australian Brumby 1 oz Silver Coins includes the latest effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This design from Jody Clark captures the Queen at the age of 89 wearing the impressive George IV State Diadem Crown. This design is the sixth-generation effigy of the Queen for Australian coins and is the first since 1966 to include her neckline and shoulders in the bust. Inscriptions include Elizabeth II, Australia, and 1 Dollar.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the 2020 Australian Brumby Silver Coin is an image of the Brumby running through the water. This design was created by Jennifer McKenna and captures the beauty of these powerful beasts that have managed to adapt and survive in some of the harsher environments of the Australian continent. Inscriptions on this face of the coin read Australian Brumby and 2020 1 oz .9999 Silver. This side of the coin also has a unique authentication feature within the design that is only available under magnification.

History

Australian legend suggests that James Brumby, a soldier, and pastoralist, was transferred from Sydney to Van Diemens Land in 1801. Upon being ordered to move, he was forced to release a number of horses into the bush. Though others escaped and lost horses have joined their ranks, the free-roaming horses have become commonly known as Brumbies over the centuries. A famous band of Brumbies roams in the Australian Alps on the southeast of the continent, but the largest populations today are in the Northern Territory and Queensland.
