The second issue of that year, the 2020 ATB Weir Farm National Historic Site 5 oz Silver Coin, featured a preserved Connecticut farm that formed the backdrop to a crucial part of the history of Impressionism. Obverse

Sculpted by the U.S. Mint’s award-winning medallic artist Phebe Hemphill, the image on the coin’s obverse is that of a painter wearing a smock and working outside the historic workshop of Julian Alden Weir, the park’s namesake. It’s accompanied by the inscription “A National Park for Art,” along with “Weir Farm,” “Connecticut,” “2020,” and “E Pluribus Unum.”

Reverse

The familiar portrait of George Washington as seen on the American circulation quarter is featured on the coin’s reverse, along with the inscriptions “United States of America,” “Liberty,” “In God We Trust,” and “Quarter Dollar.”

History

Julian Alden Weir established the farm that would become the Weir Farm National Historic Site at the height of the Impressionist art movement in the late 19th century. The gorgeous landscapes and buildings of the site’s more than five dozen acres would go on to become a source of inspiration for several generations of major American painters, and remains a place for arts education and appreciation of the natural world to this day.
