The America the Beautiful coin series provides a gorgeous and collectible look at important historic and natural locations across the country. The 2019-P ATB San Antonio Missions 5 oz Burnished Silver Coin represents Texas in the series and includes symbols of the historic missions set up in the area surrounding San Antonio centuries ago.
Highlights
Obverse
John Flanagan’s George Washington portrait, of course, appears on the obverse of this coin. The design was originally created for the 1932 quarter. It’s received a few restorations through the years to ensure crisp details when striking coins, but otherwise remains the recognizable heads image of all quarters. The obverse also includes the inscriptions: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, QUARTER DOLLAR, LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST.
Reverse
The reverse image was designed by Chris Costello and sculpted by Joseph Menna. It includes symbolic elements that pay tribute to the communities that grew up around the historic missions in the area. Wheat symbolizes farming, and the waves symbolize the San Antonio river and irrigation that made farming possible. Bells and arches stand for community and the lion is a symbol of the Spanish heritage. Inscriptions on the reverse read SAN ANTONIO MISSIONS, TEXAS, E PLURIBUS UNUM and 2019.
Packaging
The coin ships in an NGC protective slab. The coin is graded SP70 by NGC and is a stunning, perfect specimen for collectors. First Release labels are for coins received by the NGC for grading within 30 days of release from the mint.
History
The America the Beautiful coin series launched with first mintages in 2010. It continued through 2021, with five new designs being released each year from 2010 through 2020. The final design in the 56-coin series was released in 2021. Every state, federal district and territory is represented by one coin in the series.
