Oak trees are widely regarded as a symbol of strength and endurance. Several nations have chosen the oak as a national tree and its history in Germany runs very deep. Ancient Germanic tribes used the oak, specifically the Donar Oak, as a symbol. Modern Germany uses the oak as its national tree and features oak branches on its coinage, both the former Deutsche Mark and the current Euro.

Obverse

For the obverse of 2019 Oak Leaf 1 oz Silver Rounds, the Germania Mint features a long oak leaf with an acorn next to its stem. The background field includes a braided rope finish on these bullion specimens. Germanic people historically worshipped oak trees as the home of ghosts and gods. The acorn has long been viewed as a symbol and source of fertility among Germanic tribes as well.

Reverse

On the reverse, 2019 Oak Leaf 1 oz Silver Rounds feature the double-headed eagle of the Germania Mint. This specific design is for Germania Mint use and features the eagle with two corkscrew, double-edged arrows in the talons of the bird. The double-headed eagle was part of the coat of arms of the German Empire in the 19th and early 20th century.

History

The Donar Oak symbol of the Germanic people was not a species unto itself, but rather a single tree. The Donar Oak was revered by pagan Germanic people and was located around modern-day Hesse, Germany. It was reportedly cut down by Saint Boniface in 723 or 724 AD and used to build a church dedicated to St. Peter.
