Though no longer in use, the gold standard was an intriguing monetary system that still has many proponents in the modern world. Britain paved the way for the gold standard that dominated during the 19th and 20th centuries when she tied the British pound to physical gold. In honor of the 200th anniversary of the de facto adoption of the gold standard, The Royal Mint issued this beautiful commemorative piece with artwork by Dominique Evans. Right now, you can buy 2019 British Gold Standard 1/4 oz Coins online from Provident Metals.

Obverse

Queen Elizabeth II is depicted on the obverse of 2019 Gold Standard 1/4 oz Coins. Here, youll see the Queen in right-profile relief with the George IV State Diadem adorning her head. This beautiful neo-classical style effigy is credited to Jody Clark, whose initials appear below it. You will also find a guilloche-style backdrop and inscriptions along the edge reading ELIZABETH II, D G REG F D, 25. POUNDS.

Reverse

An old-fashioned weight scale is featured on the reverse of British Gold Standard 1/4 oz Coins. This device might have been used at the mint back when the gold standard was adopted to ensure weight accuracy for the classic Sovereign coins. There are inscriptions as well on the reverse that read THE GOLD STANDARD, 2019, 1/4 OZ FINE GOLD, 999.9.

History

After the Coinage Act of 1816, Britain officially signed its gold standard into law in 1821. Other countries, such as Canada, Germany, and the United States, followed a similar pattern that was ultimately disrupted in the 1930s by the Great Depression. The U.S. did briefly attempt to resurrect the gold standard after WWII with the Bretton Woods agreement, but to no avail. In 1971, Richard Nixon officially eliminated all ties between circulating currency and gold. No country has gone back to the gold standard since.
