At Queen Elizabeth II’s 1953 coronation, ten statues called The Queen’s Beasts stood guard at the entrance to Westminster Abbey. The 2nd release in the Queen’s Beasts 10-coin series commemorates the gallant Unicorn of Scotland. Long the stuff of fairy tales, the unicorn was once believed to be a real animal – with the long tusk of the narwal mistakenly presented as proof of its existence. The unicorn was passed to Queen Elizabeth through James I, who chose the beast to join the Lion of England in supporting the royal arms as a symbol of Scotland and England’s unity. The two beasts have appeared together in heraldry ever since. The Unicorn now looms large in 10 oz of .9999 fine silver, bearing a face value of 10 pounds backed by the British government. Like most British sovereign coins, the obverse displays coin artist Jody Clark’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This is the fifth portrait of Her Majesty to be used on coinage during her historically long reign. Inscriptions include “ELIZABETH II, D.G. REG. F.D., 10 POUNDS”, and the designer’s initials surrounding the image.
The reverse of this 10 oz Silver coin features Jody Clark’s rendering of the Unicorn of Scotland, which bears a coronet around its neck and is attached to a chain. It is believed that the chain symbolized the taming of a great beast to serve the king. It rears up behind the royal coat of Scotland shield depicting the fierce Lion of England. Inscriptions read “Unicorn of Scotland”, the year of issue, and the metal weight and purity.
