Viewed individually, the 2018-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coin would be the new low-mintage record in the series. With a total mintage reported around 355,000 for the West Point Mint Proof American Eagle Silver Coin in 2018, that falls 22,000 coins below the 1994 record low. However, the US Mint ended up striking another Proof American Eagle Silver Coin that year that pulled collectors away from this release and split the mintage for the year. Provident Metals currently offers the 2018-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins in perfect condition for online purchasing.
Highlights:
When you purchase one of these 2018-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver coins, the item you receive is sealed in a protective plastic slab and comes with two labels. The most important is the label that reads PF70. This means the coin still has its full, original mint luster and presents with no detracting flaws. The second label reads ultra-cameo and refers to the strong, frosted design elements with deeply-mirrored, clear background fields on the coin.
Obverse
On the obverse side is the historic Walking Liberty design. The 2018-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver coin shows Liberty walking from right to left across the design set with the sun on the horizon cresting a mountain peak. Liberty, 2018, and In God We Trust are all inscribed on this face of the coin.
Reverse
The reverse face of 2018-W Proof American Eagle Silver Coins features the heraldic eagle of the United States. This iconic emblem of the nation includes a bald eagle with its wings spread wide and the national heraldic shield on its chest. The bird clutches the arrows of war in one talon and an olive branch of peace in the other, with its head looking toward the olive branch. A ribbon in its beak reads E Pluribus Unum, while additional inscriptions include United States of America, 1 oz Fine Silver, and One Dollar.
History
When the US Mint launched sales of the 2018 Proof American Silver Eagle in January of that year, it offered the traditional W coin with the West Point Mint mark on the reverse. Starting in August, it released a second proof version struck at the San Francisco Mint with an S mint mark. The mint mark was the only difference in the coins. The second release drew a significant amount of interest. Sales of the W proof increased by only 20,000 for the remainder of the year, while the S proof sold 158,761 coins before the year was out.
