Although originally claimed and established by the United Kingdom, the Australian Antarctic Territory is known owned by the Commonwealth of Australia. This change took place in 1933. While many countries claim territorial lands on the Antarctic continent, Australia has the largest claim for any single nation.

Obverse

The obverse face of each coin bears the image of the longest-reigning monarch in British history: Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majestys portrait is in right-profile relief. Engravings on this side of the coin include the Queens name, the nation of issue for the coin, the weight, purity, and metal content. The year of issue and face value are also included.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the coin, you can find the image of an Emperor penguin standing in a snowy outcrop. On this face, the engravings include the coin series name and the territory for which the coins have been issued.

The Emperor penguin is the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species of the world. These penguins have black feathers on their backs and white bellies. They are recognized by their pale-yellow chests and ears.
