The seal includes a traditional pot at the center with branches of coffee and sorghum. Inscriptions on this face are in Kinyarwanda, an official language of Rwanda, and include Banki Nkuru YU Rwanda and Amafaranga Mirongo Itanu.

History

The Santa Maria was the largest of the ships in Columbus flotilla that also included the Nina and the Pinta. The ships were requisitioned for Columbus by Spains Queen Isabella. Santa Maria met its fate off the coast of Haiti on Christmas Day in 1492. It was dismantled and its timber used to erect Fort Navidad, or Fort Christmas, on the island. This was the first Spanish settlement anywhere in the New World.
