The 2017 Great Britain 2 oz Silver Queen’s Beasts – The Griffin is the second release in a 10 coin series from the British Royal Mint, making it a valuable addition to your silver bullion collection. Each silver coin contains two troy ounces of .9999 fine silver.
The Queen’s Beasts series features the 10 heraldic beasts that stood guard during the Queen’s coronation ceremony in 1953. These 6-foot tall sculptures represented the royal ancestry that was brought together when her Majesty was crowned. Stone replicas of these beasts now stand watch over Kew Gardens in the UK.
The Griffin is a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle. This powerful creature, combining the king of the beasts and the king of the birds, is often depicted as a guardian of treasure and valuables. The Griffin is representative of courage, strength, and vigilance.
On the obverse, you willl see the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II over a textured field. Inscriptions include the coin’s legal tender value of 5 pounds and “ELIZABETH II.” You will also notice the initials of the coin’s artist, Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark.
The reverse features the mighty Griffin with extended wings, holding a shield in its talon. Inscriptions include “GRIFFIN OF EDWARD III,” “2 OZ,” “FINE SILVER 999.9,” and “2017.”
The British Royal Mint has been producing coins for England and Great Britain for over 1,000 years, making it one of the world’s oldest mints. It is known for the unique Trial of Pyx, a process that enlists a jury of assayers to ensure the quality of minted coins.

Purchased 2 of these coins for a good price, which means they were likely from the secondary market. Both coins have light scratches on the queen's face, and light wear on the edges. One coin has several milk spots. Not thrilled with the quality, but these Griffins can be hard to find so I'm hoping they will gain value as time passes."

These coins showcase the esteem and quality that the prestigious UK mint brings to the table. I love all of these 2oz coins. The Lion is my favorite, but this one is just as cool.
I'm curious however, why do these particular Queen's Beast coins command such a high premium in the after market, even over the 2oz Lion? I've seen these well above $100 at other d ealers onlin e. Any info would be greatly appreciated." |

Was excited to order these as they looked great in the pictures and wanted to collect the entire set for the next several years and gift to younger relatives. Ordered 8 of the 2016 Lion and 8 of the 2017 Griffon. 2016 lion looks like a nice coin, but they arrived not perfect. A few dings on the reeded edge, etc. They break loose from their plastic flips in transit and seemingly banged all around. Rated between MS67 and MS69 for the Lion. The 2017 Griffin were even more dinged/damaged and rated even lower (MS66). Overall, probably would not buy again, spend your money on Australian coins, which are nicer, generally have a case to come in and have less dings/scratches when you receive them.

This coin is a great compliment to the 1st in the series, The Lion. I really love the details they put into it, and even the details included on the coat of arms. I’m definitely looking forward to future releases in this series! I put it into the 2oz high relief capsule, and while it’s not a perfect fit, it fits well enough to sit on the display stand. I don’t anticipate carrying this around in my pocket lol.

I haven’t been this excited about a coin in a long time. This 2 oz. coin is very thick so I also ordered the 2 oz. high relief capsules. The design is excellent and quality is beautiful. Sorry I missed the 1st coin in the Queen’s Beast series….Once again Provident is the best!
