The 2017 British 1 oz Platinum Queen’s Beasts – The Lion features the lion of England, and is the latest in this 10-coin series from the British Royal Mint. This design was originally released as a 2 oz silver coin and a 1 oz gold coin, but is now available as a one troy ounce of .9995 fine platinum coin.
The Queen’s Beasts coins series commemorates the 10 heraldic beasts present at Queen Elizabeth’s coronation ceremony in 1953. Each sculpture is six feet tall and represents the Queen’s royal ancestry. Stone replicas of these sculptures are on display at Kew Gardens in the UK.
A portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is featured on the obverse. Circled around her Majesty are inscriptions that read “ELIZABETH II,” the coin’s face value of 100 pounds, and the initials of the coin’s designer, Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark.
A roaring lion with a crown perched on its head stands on the reverse behind the shield of England. The beast represents courage, strength, and dignity. “LION OF ENGLAND,” “1 OZ,” “FINE PLATINUM 999.5,” and “2017” are inscribed.
For over 1,000 years, the British Royal Mint has been producing coins for Great Britain. It remains one of the oldest mints in the world.
