The obverse side of 2016 Tuvalu Pearl Harbor Gold Coins features an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The current design in use for Tuvaluan coins is the fourth-generation effigy from the Royal Mint of England. Created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley, this portrait shows the Queen in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. The inscriptions around the design element of the coin include QUEEN ELIZABETH II, 1 OZ 9999 GOLD, 2016, TUVALU, and 100 DOLLARS.

On the reverse face of 2016 Pearl Harbor 1 oz Gold Coins is a depiction of the early moments of the attack. The Japanese Navy launched the attack at 8 AM on December 7, 1941, targeting battleship row in the bay at Pearl Harbor Naval Station in Oahu, Hawaii. The inscriptions on this face of the coin include 75th ANNIVERSARY and PEARL HARBOR MCMXLI.

The unprovoked attack by Imperial Japan was aimed at disabling the United States Navy and its ability to respond to other Japanese provocations in the region. While Pearl Harbor was the largest and most devastating attack at the time, it was actually one of several planned attacks. Imperial Japan needed resources at this point in the war and planned to target colonial assets of Britain, the Netherlands, and the United States across the South Pacific and East Asia. At the same time Pearl Harbor was attacked, Japanese forces launched attacks against the Philippines, Guam, Wake Island, Malaya, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
