The obverse of this coin carries Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty striding forward carrying a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. Vibrant rays of sunlight stretch upward behind Lady Liberty. The obverse also features the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “2016”.
The reverse of the 2016 American Gold Eagle was designed by Miley Busiek and features a bald eagle holding an olive branch and returning to his nest where a female and young are waiting. The reverse also features the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, “IN GOD WE TRUST”, and “1/4 OZ. FINE GOLD~10 DOLLARS”.
The PCGS label either carries the American flag and gold-colored “FIRST STRIKE” status, or the White House beneath a star-spangled banner with “FIRST-STRIKE” in black. The label also features the text “2016”, “$10”, “PCGS MS70”, and “Gold Eagle – 30th Anniversary”.
The US Mint was created in the 1970s from the 1972 Coinage Act. The United States Mint makes all US legal tender bullion and coinage, including the American Silver Eagle and American Gold Buffalo. American Gold and Silver Eagles were first produced in 1986; 2016 is the 30th anniversary of their creation.
