Fort Moultrie was constructed using the iconic palmetto trees found throughout South Carolina and the American South. The pliable nature of the palmetto made it the perfect medium for building the fort, as the Americans would discover during the Battle of Sullivans Island. Sergeant Jasper risked his life to retrieve the colors and hoist the flag back above the ramparts of the fort on a temporary staff.

History

William Jasper was a Sergeant in the 2nd South Carolina Regiment who survived the Battle of Sullivans Island continued to serve in the Continental Army through the war until 1779 when he was mortally wounded while participating in the Siege of Savannah in Georgia.
