The 2015-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin was manufactured by the West Point location of the United States Mint. The coin itself was struck with 22 karats of actual gold and is made with a perfect combination of gold (91.67%), copper (5.33), and silver (3%). This coin also features a special proof quality, which means that the designs appear frosted while the backgrounds on each side are mirror-like.

History

Starting in 1986, the United States Mint began releasing the American Gold Eagle Coin collection in 1 oz coins. There were fractional weights as well that were released starting in 1987 by the Philadelphia Mint, but even these were later transferred to the West Point Mint in the years following 1993. Still, the 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coin has always been produced by the West Point United States Mint location.

Obverse

The image of Lady Liberty is shown on the obverse of the 2015-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin. This design was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and was originally taken from his Double-Eagle design. The image shows Lady Liberty striding forward with sun rays behind her to highlight her radiance. She holds two items in her hands: a torch and an olive branch. This design of Lady Liberty has remained the featured obverse image of the American Gold Eagle Coin since it was first released.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2015-W Proof American Eagle 1 oz Gold Coin shows an eagle family design created by Miley Busiek. In the design, a male eagle is flying overhead and carries an olive branch in his talons. He approaches a nest where a female eagle waits with her eaglets. Similar to the obverse side of the coin, the reverse also features wonderful patriotic imagery.
