Obverse

President John F. Kennedy features in left-profile relief on the obverse of the 2014-W Proof 50^th Anniversary Kennedy Gold Half Dollar coin. The bust of Kennedy was created by Gilroy Roberts in 1962 for the Presidential Medal Series and quickly modified in the months after the presidents assassination in November 1963. Inscriptions include Liberty above Kennedys head, In God We Trust on either side of his neckline, and the commemorative 50^th-anniversary date mark of 1964-2014 at the bottom.

Reverse

A modified presidential seal is displayed on the reverse of 2014-W Proof Kennedy Gold Half Dollar Coins. The design includes the heraldic eagle of the United States with the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace in its talons as the US national shield rests on its chest. Inscriptions include United States of America, E Pluribus Unum on the banner in the eagles beak, 3/4 oz .9999 Fine Gold, and Half Dollar. There is a ring of 50 stars around the heraldic eagle. Frank Gasparro, who had likewise created a similar design in 1962 for Kennedys Presidential Medial, modified his design in 1964 for the Half Dollar.

History

The Kennedy Half Dollar was the last US coin issued with 90% silver content when it debuted in 1964, and was the only US coin to use 40% silver content in circulation as it did so between 1965 and 1970. The Kennedy Half Dollar has designs from not one, but two United States Mint Chief Engravers. Gilroy Roberts served as the 9^th Chief Engraver through 1964, with Frank Gasparro succeeding him in 1965 as the 10^th Chief Engraver.
