Obverse
The obverse of the 2013-W US Mint First Spouse Edith Roosevelt Gold Coin showcases a right-facing portrait of the First Lady. During her time in the White House, she oversaw significant renovations, removing outdated Victorian decor and leading the creation of the West Wing. This addition moved the presidential offices out of the familys living quarters for the first time. The inscriptions include EDITH ROOSEVELT, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, 2013, 26TH, 1901-1909, and the W mint mark.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2013-W First Spouse Edith Roosevelt 1/2 oz Gold Coin features a column and compass, symbols of the First Ladys work in modernizing the White House. Beyond her renovation efforts, she also played a role in founding the First Ladies Portrait Gallery, ensuring their contributions were remembered. The inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, THE WHITE HOUSE RESTORED, $10, 1/2 OZ., and .9999 FINE GOLD.
History
Edith Roosevelt was the second wife of President Theodore Roosevelt. The two had known each other since childhood, as Edith was a close friend of Theodores younger sister. Their relationship turned romantic in adulthood, and they married 18 months after beginning their courtship.
