All Mexican Libertad Silver coins contain .999 pure silver. They are deemed to be legal tender even though they have no specific denomination. The highest mintage number for the 2 ounce size coin was the 50,000 its inaugural year. Only 2009 came close to that number, when mintage numbers reached 46,000. The regularly low mintage numbers, and the .999 pure silver, make the 2 ounce Mexican Libertad Silver coin very popular among collectors. Right now, Provident Metals has the 2013 Mexican Libertad 2 oz Silver Coin available for purchase.

Highlights:

  • Received in a protective plastic flip!
  • 18th year of the Mexican Libertad 2 oz Silver Coin!
  • Contains 2 Troy oz of .999 pure silver.
  • Minted a total of 17,400 coins in 2013.
  • The obverse displays the Coat of Arms of Mexico.
  • The reverse displays the Winged Victory statue.

With all of the Spanish influence, Mexico is very proud of its independence from Spain. Their liberation from Spain, which occurred in September 1821, is commemorated and symbolized in the Mexican Libertad Silver Coin series. The purity and weight of these coins make them comparable to other popular silver coins, such as the American Eagle Silver coin.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2013 Mexican Libertad Silver coin bears the current national Coat of Arms of Mexico. Ten past versions of the national Coat of Arms, used throughout history, encircle the current Coat of Arms. They all feature an eagle that much of the time has a snake in its mouth. The eagle is oftentimes perched on a cactus plant. The Coat of Arms is used to symbolize the founding of Mexico City. The single inscription on the obverse is ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.

Reverse

Mexico Citys Winged Victory statue graces the reverse of the Mexican Libertad Silver coin. The statue symbolizes Mexicos continuing independence from Spain. The background of the reverse highlights 2 Mexican volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl. Aztec mythology has a legend regarding a love story between princess Iztaccihuatl and the brave warrior Popocatepetl. To keep the 2 lovers together, the Gods turned the princess and the warrior into these 2 volcanoes. Inscriptions on the reverse are 2 ONZAS, PLATA PURA, 2013, and LEY .999.

History

The Mexican Libertad Silver coin series is minted at La Casa de Moneda de Mexico (the Mexican Mint), which is the oldest working mint in North America. The mint started producing the Libertad Silver coins in 1982 with the 1 ounce size. Ten years later, the mint began producing 4 additional sizes – the 1/20 ounce, 1/10 ounce, 1/4 ounce, and 1/2 ounce sizes. Five years later, mintage was again expanded to include the 2 ounce and 5 ounce sizes. In 2008, the 1 kg size was added, although they were not minted in either 2013 or 2014. In addition to bullion coins, the Mexican Libertad Silver series includes proof, reverse proof, and antique finish versions. All sizes and versions are minted in .999 pure silver.
