Sought by collectors, investors, and wildlife enthusiasts worldwide, the Australian Kangaroo Gold coin is one of the Perth Mints most collected coins. This 24-karat gold bullion coin is revered for its purity and artistic designs. Rare among gold bullion coins in that their design changes each year and they are accepted as legal tender. Currently, Provident Metals has the 2012 Australian Kangaroo 1 oz Gold coin available for purchase.
The 2012 Australian Kangaroo Gold coins are available in 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights. A total of 306,071 of these coins were sold in 2012 across the four weights.
The profile of Queen Elizabeth II that appears on the obverse of the 2012 Australian Kangaroo Gold coin was created by Ian Rank-Broadley and introduced in 1998. This is the fourth effigy of Her Majesty. Each new effigy portrays a more mature version of the Queen. Rank-Broadleys initials are at the base of the Queens neck. Inscriptions included are ELIZABETH II, AUSTRALIA, and 100 DOLLARS.
The kangaroo that appears on the reverse of the 2012 Australian Kangaroo Gold coin is standing alone. Behind him, in the background, is a windmill and a bush scene. Since a kangaroo is more widely associated with Australia than a gold nugget, the coin was switched from the Australian Nugget Gold to the Australian Kangaroo Gold in 1990. The kangaroo design is modified each year. The P mint mark is included on the reverse. Inscriptions included are AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO and 2012 1 OZ 9999 GOLD.
The Perth Mint opened in 1899. It remained under the authority of Great Britain until 1970, when it fell under the authority of the Government of Western Australia. The Gold Corporation Act of 1987 brought about changes to the Mint, empowering the Mint to produce and market gold, silver, and platinum legal tender coinage. Prime Minister Bob Hawke then launched the Australian Nugget Gold Coin series.
