The Lunar Series II collection at the Perth Mint started in 2008 with the release of the Year of the Mouse design. Throughout the early stages of the silver bullion release in this collection, the Lunar Series I collection actually overlapped with the Lunar Series II collection. When you purchase one of these 2010 Australian Lunar Tiger 1 oz Silver Coins from Provident Metals, each one is available in an individual protective plastic capsule. The coins come from the Lunar Series II Year of the Tiger release with a maximum mintage of 300,000 allowed by the mint. The Perth Mint announced a full sellout of the coins at the mint when originally released.
Obverse
The obverse of 2010 Australian Lunar Tiger 1 oz Silver Coins depicts Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majestys effigy as found here was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley for the Royal Mint of England. This is the fifth-generation Australian coin design with the Queen shown in right-profile relief with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara on her head. The inscriptions on this face of the coin read Elizabeth II, Australia, 1 Dollar, and 1 oz 999 Silver 2010.
Reverse
On the reverse side of 2010 Australian Lunar Tiger Silver Coins is a design with a powerful, adult tiger lying down on the grass. The tiger is featured lying near a grassy cliff ledge. The inscriptions included on this side of the coin are Year of the Tiger, the Chinese symbol for the tiger, and a P mint mark for the Perth Mint.
History
The Lunar Series II collection elevated the prominence and popularity of lunar-themed designs from the Perth Mint. The program ran from 2008 to 2019, a 12-year cycle exactly matching the proper cycle of the Zodiac. It began with the Year of the Mouse in 2008 and concluded with the Year of the Pig in 2019. Interestingly enough, the Lunar Series I silver coins overlapped early on, running from 1999 with the Year of the Rabbit to 2010 with the Year of the Tiger. The design of that coin is, however, different from the coins in this listing.
