In 1986 and 1987, when the American Eagle Gold coins were first released, the demand for them was very strong. However, those years were followed by several years of mixed demand, with no year even coming close to either of those first two years. Two events in recent history ignited spikes in the demand for American Eagle Gold coins Y2K and the Great Recession of 2008. With all of the concerns broiling around Y2K and what financial issues it might trigger, people looked to find comfort in metals. The four years from 1997 through 2000 saw the demand for American Eagle Gold coins surge, even to their all time high in 1999. After 2000, demand again cooled off for a bit until the Great Recession beginning in 2008. The demand for American Eagle Gold coins has continued at a higher level since 2008. Right now, Provident Metals has a 2010 American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin ready for purchase.

Highlights:

  • Will be received in a protective plastic flip!
  • Coin from the 25th year of the American Eagle Gold coin series!
  • Contains 1/2 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • Has a face value of $25 (USD) fully backed by the American government.
  • Saint-Gaudens Lady Liberty is featured on the obverse.
  • A family of eagles is featured on the reverse.

The price of gold continued to rise in 2010, making it the eleventh consecutive year to close at a price higher than the previous year. After starting 2010 at $1,121.50 per ounce, the price gradually dipped down to a low of $1,050.00. At that point, the price of gold started an overall upward trend for the year, although it did experience several peaks and valleys. After rising to its 2010 peak price of $1,421.00 per ounce, it suffered a small price dip at year-end, finally closing at $1,405.50 per ounce.

Obverse

The obverse of the 2010 American Eagle Gold features a full-length figure of Lady Liberty. As she walks towards you, she is holding a torch in her outstretched right hand while carrying an olive branch in her left hand. Lady Libertys long hair is flowing in the breeze behind her. This is the design created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. It includes the inscriptions LIBERTY and 2010.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2010 American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold coin features a male eagle, carrying an olive branch, flying towards a nest with a female eagle and a couple of eaglets. This family of eagles symbolizes the importance of family in America. This reverse design is the creation of Miley Busiek and was sculpted by Sherl J. Winter. It includes the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 25 DOLLARS.

History

President Theodore Roosevelt had a strong desire to invigorate the design of US coinage in the early 1900s. In order to accomplish this, in 1904, President Roosevelt retained the services of the talented Augustus Saint-Gaudens to create a design for our US coins that would return them to a thing of beauty. The resulting Saint-Gaudens Lady Liberty design appeared on the Eagle ($10) and the Double Eagle ($20) gold coins. It is a version of that Saint-Gaudens Lady Liberty design that now appears on the American Eagle Gold coins.
