The obverse of the classic double eagle design features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ rendition of Lady Liberty, strolling forward, towards a new day for the American people. In one hand, she bears a torch; in the other, Liberty holds laurel branches. “LIBERTY” is inscribed along the top of the obverse, and 50 stars border Liberty.
On its reverse, the well loved Saint-Gauden’s eagle design is featured. The regal, national bird is flying into a sunset, again depicting hope and optimism. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “TWENTY DOLLARS” are both inscribed on the top of the coin’s reverse. “E PLURIBUS UNUM” is engraved around the edge of the coin with a star separating each letter.
