Historically, the Royal Canadian Mint has created some of the purest and most beautiful coins in the world. In 1979, the Maple Leaf Gold coin was added to this spectacular lineage of coins. It is second only to the South African Gold Krugerrand as the oldest gold bullion coin available to collectors. And it is one of the best-selling gold coins for sale today. Currently, Provident Metals is pleased to offer the 2009 Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coin available for purchase.

Highlights:

  • Ships in a protective plastic flip!
  • 31st issue of the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coin!
  • Coin contains 1 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
  • The profile of Queen Elizabeth II adorns the obverse.
  • The Maple Leaf design adorns the reverse.
  • Has a face value of $50 (CAD) backed by the Canadian Government.

First minted in 1979 by the Royal Canadian Mint, the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold coin has been issued annually ever since. The Maple Leaf Gold coins have been deemed to be the standard by which other 24-karat gold bullion coins are judged, courtesy of their consistency of design and mintage. They are considered to be legal tender. With a face value of $50 Canadian Dollars, they were initially minted in only the 1 oz denomination. Fractional denominations were added in 1982 as well as various subsequent years. The additional denominations available in the 2009 Maple Leaf Gold coins are 1/20 oz ($1), 1/10 oz ($5), 1/4 oz ($10), and 1/2 oz ($20).

Obverse

The right-facing profile of Queen Elizabeth II adorns the obverse of the 2009 1 oz Maple Leaf Gold coin. This particular version of Her Majesty was created in 2003 by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt. It has been on the obverse of all Canadian coinage since 1952, when she became the Queen of England. Also on the obverse are ELIZABETH II and 50 DOLLARS 2009.

Reverse

The sugar Maple Leaf design adorns the reverse of the 2009 1 oz Maple Leaf Gold coin. This particular Maple Leaf design was created by Walter Ott in 1979 for the Royal Canadian Mint. It has remained basically unchanged and is the design for all versions of the Canadian Maple Leaf coins. The Maple Leaf is a symbol of pride and nationalism for Canadians. Also on the reverse are CANADA, 9999, FINE GOLD, and 1 OZ OR PUR.

History

The Royal Canadian Mint was originally founded in Ottawa in 1908 and is the official sovereign mint of Canada. The RCM operated in this one lone facility until the 1980s. At that time, to boost production capacity, a second facility was opened in Winnipeg. The RCM is a Crown Corporation, which makes it a government organization with a mix of commercial and public-policy responsibilities.
