The American Gold Eagle coin is one of the worlds leaders in gold bullion coin. It is guaranteed by the US government to contain the specified amount of actual gold, in troy ounces. The gold fraction in these coins is .9167, or 22 karats. The mintage count for the 2008 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle coins was 61,000, a modest increase from the low mintage number for the 1/2 oz coins in 2007. This increase occurred even with the suspension and rationing of coins that took place in the last part of 2008. Right now, Provident Metals has a 2008 1/2 oz American Eagle Gold Coin available for purchase.

Obverse
The Augustus Saint-Gaudens version of Lady Liberty is featured on the obverse of this 2008 American Eagle Gold coin. It depicts a full-length figure of Lady Liberty, who appears to be walking right off the coin at you. Her hair is flowing in the breeze. She has a torch in her outstretched right hand and an olive branch in her left hand. To the left of her right foot is a small depiction of the Capitol building. It includes the inscriptions LIBERTY and 2008.
Reverse
The Miley Busiek design, sculpted by Sherl J. Winter, is featured on the reverse of this 2008 American Eagle Gold coin. Busieks design depicts the importance of family in America. It features a male eagle, carrying an olive branch in its claws, flying towards its family in a nest. It includes the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 25 DOLLARS.
History
The American Gold Eagle was authorized under the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. The weight of the coin 1/10 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/2 ounce, and 1 ounce is marked on the coins to avoid confusion with the pre-1933 $10 gold coins. The US government guarantees that each of the coins contains the stated amount of actual gold weight in troy ounces. And by law, the gold must come from sources within the US.
