Having been allowed to sketch several chiefs from different American Indian tribes, Fraser created this composite profile from his sketches of Chief Big Tree of the Kiowa, Chief Iron Tail of the Oglala Lakota, and Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne. Inscriptions included are LIBERTY and 2007.

Reverse

The 2007-W Proof American Buffalo Gold coin reverse is decorated with the James Earle Fraser-designed profile of an American Buffalo. This design also first appeared on the Indian Head nickel. Inspired by Black Diamond of the Central Park Zoo, this massive American Buffalo is standing atop a grassy mound. History

Prior to the creation of the American Buffalo Gold coin program by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, the US was not producing any 24-karat gold coins. As a result of the passage of this Act, the US Mint began producing $50 gold coins that weighed 1 ounce and contained 99.99% pure gold. Offered in both bullion and proof versions, these 24-karat gold coins were minted from gold mined exclusively in the US.
