This design was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt and depicts the Queen without a crown, a first on Canadian coins during her reign. Reverse
A sugar maple leaf is depicted in the reverse design of 2006 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins. Walter Ott created this front-facing look at the sugar maple leaf in 1979 when the gold coins debuted in this series. History
The mintage of Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coins in 2006 was down significantly from the previous year, but was higher than the 2007 release to come. In 2008, the impact of the Great Recession was felt by the latter half of the year and demand for Maple Leafs skyrocketed to 710,718 coins, the highest mintage since 1990.
