President Theodore Roosevelt felt that US coinage had become artistically drab and he had an overwhelming desire to see it transformed to exhibit beauty once again. In 1904, President Roosevelt inquired about the possibility of retaining the talents of someone such as Augustus Saint-Gaudens to instill beauty back into our coinage. Saint-Gaudens accepted the invitation and created designs that ended up on the Eagle ($10) and the Double Eagle ($20) gold coins. It is a version of Augustus Saint-Gaudens Liberty that now appears on the American Eagle Gold coin. Currently, this Early Release of the 2021-W Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin is available with perfect certification to be purchased from Provident Metals.

  • Will be received in a protective plastic sleeve!
  • Part of the 18th year of the American Gold Eagle coin series!

Obverse

The obverse of the 2004 American Eagle Gold coin depicts a version of the Lady Liberty design of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This design was the result of President Theodore Roosevelts request to return beauty to US coins. It features a full-length figure of Lady Liberty, who appears to be walking right out of the coin. Her hair is flowing behind her, she has a torch in her extended right hand and an olive branch in her left hand.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2004 American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold coin depicts a male eagle, with an olive branch in its claws, flying above a nest with a female eagle and a couple of eaglets. This design is said to illustrate the unity and family tradition of America, and is the creation of Miley Busiek and was sculpted by Sherl J. Winter. Inscriptions on the reverse are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1/2 OZ. FINE GOLD, and 25 DOLLARS.

History

Since there was no longer anything to fear from the Y2K transition, the annual minting of American Eagle coins of all denominations suffered a drastic drop in production following the historic production numbers of 1999. However, from 2002 through 2004, the US Mint began increasing their production numbers in small amounts each year, leading to a temporary peak in 2004. This year saw the highest number of 1/2 oz Gold Eagles minted since 1999, at 98,040.

At this same time, the price of gold also began to climb. In 2002, it passed the $300 per ounce mark. In 2003, it crossed the $400 per ounce mark. While early in 2004, golds price per ounce did dip below $400, the price rallied to close out the year at $435.60 per ounce, almost $20 per ounce above where it started the year.
