One of the worlds best-selling gold coins, the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coin has been available to investors since 1979. The series started out with only a 1 oz gold coin and continues to feature that coin as the mainstay of the series more than 40 years later. Today, you have the chance to buy 2003 Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coins online at Provident Metals.

Highlights:

  • Arrives with an individual protective flip!
  • 25th year of release for the Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coin!
  • Total mintage of 194,631 gold coins!
  • Contains 1 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold.
  • The face value of $50 (CAD) is fully backed by the Canadian government.
  • Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse.
  • Sugar maple leaf on the reverse.

In 1979, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Series. At this point in time, only the South African Krugerrand Gold Coin existed as an option for investors looking to own private collections of gold bullion coins. By the end of the 1980s, there would be a handful of different gold bullion coin programs available to investors.

Obverse

Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse side of 2003 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins. This portrait was designed in 1990 by Dora de Pedery-Hunt and is, notably, the first portrait of the Queen from a Canadian artist to feature on Canadian coins. In this right-profile relief, Her Majesty wears the George IV State Diadem Crown. Inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, 50 DOLLARS, and 2003.

Reverse

A sugar maple leaf features on the reverse face of the 2003 Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coin. This design was created in 1979 by Walter Ott for this series and remains unchanged to this day. This front-facing image of the maple leaf is accompanied by inscriptions of CANADA, 9999, 1 OZ FINE GOLD, and OR PUR.

History

Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins, like other major gold bullion coins, are struck by the mint to meet demand each year. This has resulted in major ebbs and flows in demand. After experiencing demand above or around one million coins annually from 1979 to the late 1980s, the 1990s saw an extended period of decline in demand. This was briefly undone by the Y2K crisis, but the pattern of demand again trended downward in the early 2000s.

Ordering

These 2003 Canadian Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coins are available to you for purchase in protective plastic flips. The mintage of just over 194,000 coins is the sixth lowest in the history of the series.
