These coins had a final mintage of 344,843 coins in 2002. This was the highest mintage mark for most of the 2000s, far surpassing the 2000-2001 issues and the 2003-2007 issues. It wasnt until the Great Recession set in that mintages finally surpassed the 2002 issue at the close of the decade.

Obverse

Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse side of 2002 Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins. This portrait of the Queen is the third-generation design from Dora de Pedery-Hunt and the 2002 coin is one of the last in the series to use this design. It was created in 1990 and was the first ever designed by a Canadian artist for national coinage. Inscriptions on this side include ELIZABETH II, 50 DOLLARS, and 2002.

Reverse

The sugar maple leaf is found on the reverse of 2002 Maple Leaf 1 oz Gold Coins. The image featured here was created in 1979 by Walter Ott for the debut of the Maple Leaf Gold Series. It offers a front-facing look at the natural splendor of the sugar maple leaf. Inscriptions on this side of the coin read CANADA, 9999, FINE GOLD, and 1 OZ OR PUR.

History

The 2000 issue of Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Coins remains the lowest in the series as of the 2020s. After the Y2K crisis proved unfounded, demand for precious metals sunk below the low demand levels seen throughout much of the 1990s. The 2002 date was the highest mintage by far between 2000 and 2007. It took the Great Recession starting in 2008 to push mintages above the 2002 mark, with both the 2008 and 2009 releases surpassing the 2002 mark as demand surged into the 2010s.
