The $20 gold piece known as the Double Eagle is often cited as one of America’s most beautiful historic coins. Designed by the master sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, it circulated in international trade between 1907 and 1933 and left an enduring impression on numismatics. The U.S. Mint’s American Eagle Coin program was started to pay annual tribute to this legacy in 1986, with each issue combining artwork from the original with fresh visions from modern medallic artists. The 2000-W Proof American Eagle 1/2 oz Gold Coin is an example, struck at the West Point Mint and available now from Provident Metals.

Coin Highlights:

  • Arrives in secure box packaging, accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity!
  • Issued in 2000 as a part of the U.S. Mint’s American Eagle Coin Program!
  • Contains 1/2 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • Face value of $25 (USD) backed by the United States government.
  • Obverse side features a faithful recreation of Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty.
  • Reverse side features Miley Busiek’s distinctive bald eagle engravings.

The 2000-W Proof American Eagle Gold Coin’s mint mark identifies it as one of the post-1994 coins struck at the West Point Mint, and it boasts a high-quality proof finish with original, unblemished luster. It ships fully insured by Provident Metals in box packaging with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Obverse

The obverse side features a recreation of Saint-Gaudens’ classic image of Lady Liberty that’s notable for its fidelity to the original. She has flowing hair, an olive branch in her left hand, and a torch in her right, and is accompanied by the inscriptions “LIBERTY” and “2000.”

Reverse

Featured on the reverse side is a male bald eagle flying back to his nest with an olive branch in his grasp, with his mate below protecting their hatchlings. This is accompanied by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “25 DOLLARS,” along with a “W” mint mark.

History

A famous sculptor of monuments and memorials, Augustus Saint-Gaudens also created numerous relief portraits in his early career, and he brought that experience to coinage. In its original, ultra-high-relief form, his Double Eagle design was so far ahead of its time that contemporary minting technology couldn’t mass-produce it. It was the high-relief form that attained the widest circulation and inspired the American Eagle coin.
