Robert Scot, Christian Gobrecht, James B. Longacre, Bela Lyon Pratt, and Augustus Saint-Gaudens all designed images for the various denominations of the Gold Eagle circulation coins. However, only the 1907-1933 Liberty design from the Gold Double Eagle was so beloved that it went down in history with the name of its design forever attached to the series. The Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle is one of Americas greatest coin designs ever.

Obverse

On this side of the Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins is the design of Lady Liberty. She is depicted in front-facing relief with her guiding light torch held high above in her right hand and a large olive branch of peace in her left hand. Her figure was originally surrounded by 46 stars and from 1912 onward it was surrounded by 48 stars.

Reverse

This face of the $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coin features the image of an American bald eagle in flight. The eagle glides through the sky with its wings spread out as the sun rises over the nation.

History

Pre-33 $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins were issued in 1907 with Roman numerals for the date mark and no national motto. In 1908, Arabic numerals were introduced but without the national motto for most of the year. Starting in late 1908 and continuing through 1933, the national motto In God We Trust featured on the reverse.
