Liberty Gold Double Eagles were produced between 1849 and 1907. The coins went through three reverse design versions. All coins had the Liberty Coronet design on the obverse from start to finish. From 1849 to 1866, the coins had no national motto and the face value as Twenty D. The face value inscription remained unchanged from 1866 to 1876 with the national motto In God We Trust added. From 1877 to 1907, the face value was inscribed as Twenty Dollars.
Obverse
The obverse side of Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins features the left-profile portrait of Liberty wearing the coronet crown on her head with the word Liberty inscribed on it. 13 stars surround her head and the date mark is featured below.
Reverse
On the reverse of Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins is a depiction of the modified Great Seal of the United States. This design effectively uses the heraldic eagle of the United States with ornate design elements included. Both designs in this release are from James B. Longacre.
History
The $20 Gold Double Eagle was introduced in 1849 as the Treasury Department saw an influx of gold from the California Gold Rush. The Gold Double Eagle would eventually become the most popular coin in the series and was the greatest denomination at $20.
Ordering
These Pre-33 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle Coins have Mint State 62 certifications from either the PCGS or NGC. Coins in this condition have an impaired or dull mint luster, clusters of small marks and a few large marks or nicks.
