The Austro-Hungarian Empire that dominated much of the land in central and southern Europe during the late 19th and early 20th centuries was one of the more unique empires of world history. Though the empire was ruled by one man for the entirety of its existence, it consisted of two monarchies, an autonomous region, and two forms of the same currency. Right now, you can get 20 Korona Gold Coins of Hungarian issue online from Provident Metals.

  • Arrives with a protective plastic flip!
  • Issued from 1892 to 1916!
  • Contains .1960 Troy oz of actual gold content.
  • Bears a face value of 20 Korona from the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
  • On the obverse is a full bust of Emperor Franz Joseph I.

With your purchase of the 20 Korona Gold Coin in this listing, Provident Metals packages the coins inside of individual protective plastic flips. These coins were issued in the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1892 to 1916. Please note that we cannot guarantee a specific date mark within that time period. If you buy more than one coin, you may get several coins that all have the same dates.

Obverse

On the obverse side of 20 Korona Gold Coins is a depiction of Emperor Franz Joseph I. Unlike the 20 Corona Austrian Gold coins the empire issued, the 20 Korona Gold Coin used throughout Hungary during this period had a full bust of Franz Joseph I rather than just a bust of his head. He is depicted in his royal robes with a crown on his head, scepter in his right hand, and a crowned globe in his left. Franz Joseph I was the Emperor of Austria from 1848 and became King of Hungary as a dual monarch when the empire was formed in March 1867.

Reverse

The reverse face of 20 Korona Gold Coins includes a complex design blending elements of the Habsburg Dynasty shield and the coat of arms of Hungary. The shield in the foreground and the nature of the crown atop the larger background shield are based on the coat of arms for the Kingdom of Hungary. The background shield blends in designs from the Habsburg seal. It is flanked by angels on either side.

History

The Austro-Hungarian Empire adopted the gold standard in 1892 and began to issue Corona-based denominations in Austria and Korona-based denominations in Hungary. The most popular denominations were the 10 and 20 Korona coins. In 1916, as World War I raged in Europe, gold coining in the empire ceased and would not resume as the empire was dissolved following its defeat as part of the Central Powers.
