Obverse

The obverse field of the $20 Canadian Confederation Gold Coins features the final British-designed portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Created in 1965 by Arnold Machin, the portrait depicts the Queen in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. This image featured on Canadian coins from 1965 to 1989 and includes a beaded border around the design field. Inscriptions on this side include Elizabeth II and D.G. Regina.

Reverse

On the reverse side of $20 Canadian Confederation Gold Coins, you will find the ornate Arms of Canada. The coat of arms for the nation, it features a shield at its center with five fields. Those fields include all dominions of the United Kingdom: Three Lions of England, Lion of Scotland, Harp of Ireland, French Fleur de Lis, and three maple leaves connected on a single stem. The shield and crest are topped by a lion in the passant guardant with the Union Jack to one side and the French flag to the other. The shield is supported by the Lion of England and the Unicorn of Scotland.

History

The Canadian Confederation movement saw the British colonies in Canada form a federation together. This included the Province of Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick uniting together. The federation resulted in four provinces with the former Province of Canada split into the provinces of Ontario and Quebec to join Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
