Design

The design of these 2 oz Sun Stone Silver Stackers is based directly on the original stone disc built by the Aztecs. The original is quite worn in some parts, so the designers here have taken small liberties to ensure the full design appears as clearly as possible. Because these pieces are stackable, you will find the same design on both the obverse and reverse sides.

In the center of the image sits Tonatiuh, a famous Aztec sun god. Surrounding this deity are four blocks, which indicate the previous suns, or eras of Aztec cosmology. When the original stone was carved, the Aztecs thought they were in the fifth and final era, which they called Four Movement. Other details include images from the Aztec solar calendar as well as stunning symmetrical designs across the outer rim.

History

The Aztecs were a tribe who occupied the Valley of Mexico from the 1300s until the arrival of Cortes in 1519. The Aztec civilization was in full swing by 1350 with the construction of various canals and causeways. During the 1400s, the Aztecs were at the peak of their powers, with the mighty Montezuma I helping to expand the empire while also creating social, political, and economic reforms. But the empire was short-lived. By 1519, Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes arrived in Tenochtitlan, and by 1521 the city was destroyed.
