Obverse

Inscriptions on the obverse of this coin read LIBERTY and 1994. The image on the obverse is of Liberty. She’s shown in motion, striding forward with boldness. Her arm is raised and the torch of enlightenment is blazing, lighting the path to freedom. Her other arm cradles olive branches to demonstrate peace, and behind her, the sun seems to be rising as rays of light span the background. The United States capitol building also makes an appearance in the lower left of the background. The image was designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and was originally used on historic gold coins prior to 1933. It was chosen as the obverse coin for gold coins in the American Eagle Program starting in 1986.

Reverse

The reverse inscriptions on the 1994 American Eagle Gold Coin read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1/10 OZ FINE GOLD, and 5 DOLLARS. Amid all the inscriptions is an inspiring image of a family of bald eagles and their nest. One eagle is flying and carrying an olive branch. The image was designed by Miley Busiek Frost.

Packaging

This coin is packaged in a protective plastic flip that can be used for long-term storage and even display, if you like. The flip is clear.

History

The modern American Eagle Program was launched by the U.S. Mint in 1986. At that time, it included both gold and silver coins. Since then, the Mint has added platinum coins. Legally, the mint can only change the images on these coins every 25 years, which means the obverse and reverse images seen on the 1994 American Eagle oz Gold Coin are the same as those seen on gold coins in this program from 1986 through 2020.
