Obverse

The obverse image on this coin comes from a classic Augustus Saint-Gaudens design. It shows Liberty in motion as she takes a bold step forward. Behind her, the field is patterned with rays of sunlight that seem to rise up from the horizon, as if a new day is dawning. The U.S. capitol building can be seen in the lower left of the background. Liberty herself is posed with her arm raised high, her torch lighting the path to enlightenment and freedom. She also carries an olive branch as a symbol of peace. Inscriptions on the obverse of this 1993 American Eagle Gold Coin read LIBERTY and 1993.

Reverse

The reverse image on this coin was designed by Miley Busiek Frost. It includes a family of eagles in and flying near a nest. One adult eagle carries an olive branch while another sits in the nest with the young. The reverse inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, IN GOD WE TRUST, E PLURIBUS UNUM, 1/10 OZ FINE GOLD, and 5 DOLLARS.

Packaging

The coin ships protected in a plastic flip, which is clear, so you can use it for protected display and storage once you receive your coin.

History

The obverse image on this coin dates back over a century. Saint-Gaudens created it for use on early gold eagle coins that were all minted prior to 1933. The Frost image was created specifically for the modern program in 1986 and used from 1986 to 2020. The Mint must keep the images on coins in the American Eagle Program the same for at last 25 years.
