When the Proof American Eagle Silver Coins were introduced in 1986, the United States Mint struck both the proof silver coin and Brilliant Uncirculated silver coin at the San Francisco Mint. While the bullion coin would continue to be produced there through most of the 1990s, the 1992 Proof American Eagle Silver Coin was the last one struck at the San Francisco Mint. From 1993 to 2000, the Philadelphia Mint produced the coins and the West Point Mint has done so since 2001. The San Francisco Mint has issued special commemorative versions of the Proof American Eagle Silver Coins since 1992, but on a rare basis.

Obverse

On the obverse side of 1992-S Proof American Eagle 1 oz Silver Coins is a depiction of Walking Liberty. This iconic emblem of the nation first featured on the US half dollar from 1916 to 1947 and was created by Adolph A. Weinman. Inscriptions on this side of the coin include only Liberty, In God We Trust, and 1992.

Reverse

The reverse element of the 1992-S Proof American Eagle Silver Coin comes with the heraldic eagle design. The heraldic eagle on these coins was modified in 1986 by John Mercanti. It boasts a powerful bald eagle with the US national shield on its chest, arrows in one talon, and an olive branch in the other. Inscriptions read United States of America, E Pluribus Unum on a banner in the birds beak, 1 oz Fine Silver One Dollar, and the S mint mark.

History

Mintage of the 1992 Proof American Eagle Silver Coin was just 498,654 coins. Demand for the Proof Silver Eagle fell in the 1990s with 1994 representing the all-time low at just 372,168 coins.
